about me
Thomas Aebi
Born in 1961, grew up in Solothurn.
I began my artistic training with an apprenticeship as a stone sculptor. Over the course of 20 years of professional practice, I was able to gain a lot of experience in the craft and also a feeling for shapes, for light and shadow, the only colors that a sculptor has at his disposal.
I later rediscovered this playful use of light in Dutch Baroque painting.
My most influential teachers are the painters of the 17th century.
Since careful craftsmanship is still important to me, I began to repaint these old masters.
And the longer it goes on, the more there is to interpret it. But always with the focus on this mysterious atmosphere, where hidden flowers or fruits emerge barely visible from the darkness and others catch the light in all their splendor.
My works are intended to bring the beauty, but also the transience of creation into the living room.
Instead of the lavish baroque frames, I choose simple frames and think that they fit into modern homes. In the hope of making some of the baroque beauty and playfulness more accessible to our time.

I paint with these colors from Old Holland.
